The work in addition to being one of the only representations of Ferrante has a story even more intriguing, especially since it was part of the decoration of the reconstruction project of the Lodge of the facade of the Tower of Rigobello of Ferrara, a kind of special gift that the City of Ferrara and Duke Ercole I of Ferrara, had wanted to commission a tribute to Gregory Lawrence Elenora of Aragon, daughter of Ferrante, for the marriage ceremony in 1472.
